L'IUT de Belfort-Montbéliard

At the heart of the region…

Initially founded in 1969 on the Belfort site, the Belfort-Montbéliard IUT (Belfort-Montbéliard University Institute of Technology) was extended to the nearby area of Montbéliard in 1991 which, although in a different county (Doubs), is only 20 km away and in the same urban zone.

The IUT has strong local ties, offering two-year training programs for jobs in the industrial and tertiary sectors:

  • electrical and computer systemsengineering (DUT GEII)
  • thermal and energy engineering (DUT GTE)
  • Quality, Logistics and Industrial Organization (DUT QLIO)
  • telecommunications and network engineering (DUT R&T)
  • communication networks and services (DUT SRC)
  • applied social studies (DUT CS)

The IUT has successfully changed over to the "LMD" system ("3-5-8": Bachelor’s Degree-Master’s-Doctorat). By offering six vocational bachelor’s degree courses, the establishment provides acces to further studies for its students: management of innovation projects, integration of industrial processes and communication technologies, social intervention, computer systems and software, VEGA (Vehicles: Electronics and Management of Automatic devices), which generates jobs in the automobile sector. A further vocational bachelor’s degree course was launched in September 2005 : DORA (Dosimetry and Radioprotection in industry and medicine).

Beside these traditional introductory courses, the IUT offers other more flexible forms of training. It proposes continuous professional development that gives access to all of the training programs at the IUT, and the possibility of Validating Acquired Experience ("VAE" system).

A pedagogy that is in tune with students’ needs…

The Belfort-Montbéliard IUT’s teaching objective is to maximise students’ potential academically and professionally. It aims to provide training programmes that can either be validated directly by finding a professional career, or by pursuing further studies. Although 30% of students choose to enter the job market, it is the second route that attracts most candidates. The IUT also promotes applications to other university courses and engineering schools (20%).

Businesses actively contribute to all of these degree courses by participating in the design of the programmes and project subjects, by providing professionals for lecturing, or by welcoming students during their obligatory work experience placements.

These courses are not limited to France; the IUT is endeavouring to build an international network to organize exchanges. Students have the opportunity to go abroad for work placements or studies of between three and nine months’ duration thanks to funding from the Franche-Comté region and European programmes. Links with the region are further strengthened by the fact that the Institute’s Board of Directors is chaired alternately by the mayors of Belfort and of Montbéliard.

The IUT has multiple projects to improve social cohesion in the region: developing apprenticeships, offering greater possibilities for computer-based distance learning, and improving the integration of foreign students by offering a one-year pre-degree foundation course to resolve difficulties with the French language. The IUT does everything in its power to maintain its vocation as an Institute that is a great place to study…
